  About Ligand
Ligand is a small molecule which binds to a biomolecule and alters its activity by promoting (agonist) or repressing (antagonist) its function. The ligands of orphans and adopted orphan receptors are either endogenous or exogenous in nature. The endogenous ligands in most of cases are metabolic by-products or vitamins. On other hand, exogenous ligands can be either naturally derived or synthesized in vitro. However what enables a small molecule to be termed as a ligand for orphans and adopted orphan receptors? In most cases, the binding of a molecule to the LBD of nuclear receptors qualifies it to be a ligand.
